What is the typical process in getting new kitchen cabinets?

The most common question we face with our customers is “how long will this take?”  If only the answer could take as many words…  In reality the answer is predictably more complicated, mostly because we are never certain how long the initial stage in the process will take.  We can predict how long it will take us to build and install the new kitchen cabinets with a good amount of certainty but we never know how long it will take us to work out a design and material/finish scheme that everyone can agree on.  This initial stage is often the most time consuming and uncertain part of the process with custom cabinetry; every detail, from materials to configuration, must reflect the customer’s specific needs and vision.

Above is an example of a design scheme used to decide on the final construction drawings for this kitchen addition in Palos Verdes.  It took numerous versions of such design concepts to reach agreement on what will be actually built.  Although this stage is extremely time consuming, it is critical to invest this time to ensure that the final product accommodates every detailed need of the customer.  We will aid you throughout the steps with samples of materials, finish, and 3D designs help you visually the changes.  It is always better to invest the time at the beginning to make all the changes at the design stage than be forced to make costly and even more time consuming changes after all the work is complete.

So what is the process then and how long should you expect to wait?  Below are guidelines for you to keep in mind at each stage:
  1. Design Stage: Design and material selection – typically 1-3 weeks
  2. Final Agreement: Shop drawings and final buy in from all parties – 2 to 3 days
  3. Start of Installation: Installation of cabinet boxes and mouldings – 2 to 3 weeks from Stage 2
  4. Completion of Installation: Installation of doors, drawer fronts, pull-outs, decorative elements, etc – 1 to 2 weeks from Stage 3
At the end of the day, you can expect the completed installation of everything within 4 to 6 weeks from agreed upon designs and material selection.
